Kingston to terminate production of miniSD and MMCmobile cards

As microSD card gains more penetration in the small form factor memory card market, Kingston Technology is said to be planning to terminate production of miniSD and MMCmobile cards from 2008 while Taiwan memory card makers said they will let the formats phase out naturally.

Demand for miniSD and MMCmobile cards is low with most handset vendors not designing future products to support these standards of cards anymore, said sources at Kingston's Taiwan branch. Although miniSD cards can still be used in other products such as digital cameras, typically with an extra adaptor, but they are currently a transitional product with shrinking market share, the sources commented.

Taiwan memory makers also observed that microSD is seeing its mainstream role in the small form factor memory card market further secured, implying that sales growth of miniSD and MMCmobile cards will be limited in the future. However, they added in saying that they would not set a concrete schedule for terminating production of these cards, but instead plan to let the market drive a natural phase out.
